Student Media is WVU's integrated media department, comprising The Daily Athenaeum, U92 The Moose and Prospect and Price Creative – all student-run media organizations. This department provides valuable opportunities for students in publishing, broadcast, and marketing and advertising. Each year, more than 100 students find a home in Student Media’s inclusive and welcoming organizations. Managed by a professional staff, Student Media provides real-world experiences in media, as well as internships, training and portfolio and resume building found nowhere else on WVU’s campus.
Why we need your support:
The media industry is constantly evolving, and to provide students opportunities that will make them competitive in the job market, Student Media must give students access to the equipment and the hands-on experiences to prepare them for internships and jobs.
Your help is needed to complete the vision for Student Media – a full renovation of The Daily Athenaeum Building (which houses all three of our organizations). This major renovation will include renaming the building, state-of-the-art broadcast facilities for U92, complete with professional studios, podcasting space and new offices that will become a centerpiece for visitors to WVU.
The bottom floor of the building will be renovated to house Prospect and Price Creative, a student-run creative services agency which creates targeted marketing solutions for on- and off-campus clients. The goal is to create a modern space for designers and the marketing team, as well as The DA’s advertising staff, that stimulates creativity and innovation and models the professional advertising agency experience.
Other improvements will include enhancing the infrastructure of the building and upgrades to The DA newsroom.
The real benefit of renovations is the opportunity to collaborate. Student Media organizations are separate yet work together on projects that appear on air, online and in print; they share a podcasting studio, video equipment, a student sales force and a five-person professional staff. Not every student who participates in student media will have a career in the industry. Yet the skills they learn at The DA, U92 and Prospect and Price – writing, editing, reporting, collaborating, meeting deadlines, creating programming, selling advertising, managing and marketing – will prepare them for opportunities in many fields.
