Celebrating 15 years of the WVU Institute for Community and Rural Health and 25 years of WV AHEC!
Since 2011 and 2001, WVU Institute for Community and Rural Health and West Virginia Area Health Education Centers (WV AHEC) have partnered with West Virginia’s dedicated healthcare providers, visionary legislators, and our WVU colleagues to strengthen the heartbeat of our rural communities. From the halls of the Capitol to frontline clinics, our collective impact has transformed the health and well-being of our Mountaineer family.
Our legacy is built on service, but our future depends on continued collaboration. As we embark on this landmark year in 2026, we invite you to join us in sustaining this vital mission.
WVU ICRH: As part of West Virginia University's land-grant mission, the ICRH coordinates rural health education and service opportunities across all WVU Health Sciences schools in collaboration with the WV Area Health Education Centers (AHECs). The Institute exposes health professions students to rural communities through vital clinical rotations, providing them with hands-on training and fostering a deep understanding of rural practice environments in hopes they will stay and serve the communities they trained in. This commitment extends to financial support through service awards and scholarships, incentivizing future healthcare providers to commit to practicing in underserved areas of the state.
WV AHEC: Since 2001, WV AHEC has worked tirelessly to increase access to quality healthcare by developing an interprofessional workforce prepared to meet the unique needs of West Virginia’s rural communities. Today, WV AHEC operates through a program office and five regional centers, covering 50 of the state’s 55 counties. Its initiatives include health career exploration and shadowing programs for high school students, immersive clinical rotations for health professions students and residents, and continuing education for practicing providers—all designed to recruit, train, and retain healthcare professionals where they are needed most.
Your belief in our mission and your contributions on WVU Day of Giving enable us to invest in the healthcare workforce and resources essential for a healthier rural future.
When you make a gift, no matter the size, you create an immediate impact for the WVU Institute for Community and Rural Health, WV AHEC, and the underserved communities we support. A contribution to the funds listed below goes even further in helping us address West Virginia’s most critical healthcare shortages.
Together, we can strengthen community health, one student, one practitioner, and one rural clinic at a time.
