Family & Community Development

Building Stronger Communities, Empowering West Virginians

West Virginia’s families and communities are the heartbeat of our state. WVU Extension’s Family and Community Development programs provide the knowledge, tools, and hands-on experiences people need to build financial stability, grow local economies, and inspire future leaders. From youth-focused programs supporting entrepreneurship and financial literacy to community-focused engagement that increases capacity, improves safety, and advances workforce development, we are dedicated to helping West Virginians thrive.

Your Support Makes a Difference

Through WVU Extension’s youth entrepreneurship programs such as My Hometown is Cool, we’re empowering students to turn ideas into action, spark innovation, and gain the confidence to pursue business opportunities in their own communities. Our financial literacy programs help families learn how to manage budgets, reduce debt, plan for the future, and build long-term stability—skills that strengthen both households and local economies.

Our impact extends even further through partnership initiatives with the Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS), MonForest Towns, and other programs dedicated to strengthening local capacity, while our Fire Service and Safety and Health Extension programs lead nationally-recognized innovations in safety and workforce development training. Your support helps turn ideas into action that foster civic engagement, cultivate resilient leaders, and empower communities across West Virginia to shape and advance their economic well-being.
