Why we need your support
The West Virginia University Alumni Association has more than 90 chapters across the globe who foster connections among Mountaineers wherever they might call home. These groups create a sense of community by connecting alumni and friends of all ages, cultivating lasting relationships, providing positive support and radiating loyalty for West Virginia University. Chapters regularly host events and initiatives to raise money for their independent scholarship funds and today, we invite you to join the cause.
How you can help
The following chapters seek your support to help grow their scholarship funds to send students to WVU from the regions where they currently live. We hope that you will consider contributing in hopes of a brighter future for all Mountaineers.
Bob and DJ Gibson Scholarship Fund – Delaware Chapter of the WVU Alumni Association
The fund provides undergraduate scholarships for students enrolled at WVU who are living in Delaware. Once the fund reaches $50,000, the chapter will be excited to award two scholarships each year!
Boone County Alumni and Friends Scholarship Fund
The Boone County Chapter is recognized throughout our state and the nation for its preeminent academic scholarship program. It currently endows scholarships with the WVU Foundation, Inc. The chapter has five named scholarships: The “Buster” and Geraldine Atkins; the Gus and Mary Lee Shaffer, Jr.; the Dennie Lee and Judy Hill; the Judie Hall; and the Larry LaFon. The lifetime gifts made in our name by two of our benefactors: H.G. “Gus” and Mary Lee Shaffer and Dennie Lee and Judy Hill, will provide a significant endowment for future Boone County WVU students.
Several years ago, the chapter was pleased to assist a group of Boone Countians to endow and award a scholarship in honor of their former teacher, Karl E. Williams. The group raised more than $11,000 and invested it with the WVU Foundation as a subfund of our chapter. It was honored to assist the “Friends of Karl E. Williams” and to provide matching funds for their first annual scholarship. The chapter awards academic scholarships to deserving Boone County students attending WVU.
Central Florida WVU Student-Academic Scholarship Fund
Beginning in the Fall of 2017, we very enthusiastically kicked off a new Central Florida WVU Student-Academic Scholarship Fund opportunity. This new fund was created to provide scholarships for non-athletic, academic achievements of Central Florida students attending West Virginia University.
During the last 3 years, with the help of our local alumni and friends and Friendly Confines, our game watch partner, we have deposited $16,831.57 toward this fund. As a result, we have exceeded our 5-year goal which was $13,000. This scholarship will begin awarding $1,000 per year starting with the 2019 Fall semester. Our overall goal is to reach a $25,000 endowment amount within ten years.
Central PA WVU Alumni Chapter Scholarship
The Central Pennsylvania Alumni Chapter Scholarship Fund was established in 2008 and has awarded $15,700 in scholarships to 13 recipients from the Central Pennsylvania region. We currently offer two $1,000 scholarships but would like to increase that to two $2,000 scholarships.

Greater Cincinnati/Dayton Chapter WVU Alumni Scholarship
For the past 18 years the Cincinnati/Dayton WVU Alumni Chapter has provided at least one, and for the last several years, two $1,000 per year scholarships to a local student who attends WVU. To date, our chapter has given out over $20,000 to help support local WVU students. The scholarships are one of the ways our chapter gives back to our alma mater and to the local community. Our goal is to continue to build our endowment so that additional scholarships can be offered. We are close to being able to offer a third scholarship and with your help we can achieve that goal this year.
Greater Kanawha Chapter

While we are extremely proud to support students from our area, we also feel that it is a wonderful way to stay connected with the WVU community. We look forward to keeping this tradition of giving back alive and thank all of our supporters over the years.
Low Country Mountaineers Charles Drake Memorial Scholarship Fund
The fund provides undergraduate scholarships for students enrolled at WVU who are living in South Carolina, with first choice given to students located in Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley counties. Since 2010, our chapter has awarded $8,000 in scholarships to deserving students from the low country. We could not accomplish this without your support!

The chapter frequently engages local alumni and students in community service, student recruiting, gamewatch parties, and social events, and they welcome your support.
Rocky Mountain Chapter Scholarship Fund
Morgantown is a long way from Colorado, and our goal is to increase the number of students from Colorado that attend WVU. The Rocky Mountain Alumni Chapter Scholarship was established in 2006 to help a student from Colorado who attends WVU, and since that time we have been able to support some great students. Check some of them out at https://www.wvucolorado.com/student-life. In 2018, we signed up to endow our scholarship to insure it will go on in perpetuity, and your contributions will help us achieve that goal.
Sacramento Valley Chapter Scholarship Fund
This new chapter has created a scholarship fund that will soon provide funds to help send students from the Sacramento Valley to West Virginia University. We appreciate your support as we grow the chapter and the fund.
San Diego Chapter Scholarship Fund
The West Virginia University Alumni San Diego Chapter Scholarship Fund was established in 2016 through the West Virginia University Foundation. This scholarship will provide financial assistance to a graduating high school senior in San Diego, Imperial, Riverside, or Orange Counties.
Southern NJ - Eric Schaetzle Memorial Scholarship
The Southern New Jersey Chapter of West Virginia University’s Alumni Association has established an endowed scholarship in memory of WVU graduate, Eric Schaetzle. Eric passed away in a car accident shortly after graduating from WVU with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. The endowment will provide scholarships for undergraduate students from the area served by the Southern New Jersey Alumni Chapter including Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Mercer and Salem counties in New Jersey.
“We hope the recipients of this scholarship will be able to live the life that Eric was not able to by helping people,” said Eric’s family. “He was known for his great big hugs and more importantly, his time, time to care about another human being and what they were going through.”
Stanley E. Friedman North Coast Cleveland WVU Alumni Association Scholarship

Scholarships are awarded to deserving students whose home residences are in the chapter’s service area. Your consideration of this worthwhile, tax deductible initiative is sincerely appreciated! Each year, the North Coast Cleveland Alumni Chapter awards a scholarship to a deserving student who hails from the area served by the chapter. Our scholarship is named for Stanley E. Friedman for his lifelong service to the WVU Alumni Association, including his past leadership of the North Coast Cleveland Chapter.
